In 1924 the friars, in order to avoid the dispersion of certain works of art and to ensure their appreciation within an adequate structure, started the Museum of the Porziuncola, locating it in the fifteenth century friary (that of St. Bernardine) which survived the construction of the Basilica. It forms an integral part of the pilgrim's journey and by means of the exhibitions set out in chronological order aims to provide the visitor with a greater understanding of the places seen.

The first room A - Pre-Franciscan - houses a model that reproduces the situation in Assisi at the time of St. Francis.
The second B (immediately on the left) contains the more important works of art, the Crucifix of Giunta Pisano (1236), with Christ hanging lifeless from the cross, the Screen of the Master of St. Francis (13th century) with the image of the Poor Man of Assisi and two fourteenth century reliquaries by Pietro il Teutonico.
In the third room C the prized dossal (Ceramic Altarpiece) of the Coronation of the Virgin by Andrea della Robbia is to be found.
In the fourth room D there is a large collection of Marian iconography the most notable being the statue "Madonna del Latte" (the Madonna of the Milk).
Along the way it is possible to visit the "little friary" where during the year various exhibitions are held on Franciscan subjects.

In front of the Museum there are two other large exhibition rooms dedicated to contemporary sacred art. Moreover, the old refectory with around 200 seats is available to the Museum for conferences or cultural exhibitions.
