The statue
The white statue of St. Francis of enamelled terracotta, and situated at the centre of the chapel, is by Andrea della Robbia (around 1490).
An expression of inner, partly veiled sadness seems to emanate from the face of the saint bringing to mind his cry "Love is not loved."
In his hands he holds the Gospel and the Cross, between which two poles the entire life of the Poor Man of Assisi unfolded. From the Gospel he took the fundamental laws for his, and his followers', way of life, and to the Cross he always looked with the ultimate desire of being affixed to it in order to attain perfect likeness with Christ.
